Michigan transportation costs: The arithmetic behind the bridge-and-rides example

Deep Dive EP10 · November 1, 2026

A transportation comparison is only useful when its inputs are visible. Episode 10 uses a long-range thought experiment, not a price quote or a forecast. This article lays out the arithmetic and corrects the totals spoken in the original narration.

The correction

The hybrid-then-rides example has three inputs:

  • Vehicle purchase: $30,000.
  • Operating costs: 15 years × $3,000 = $45,000.
  • Later rides: 10 years × 12 months × 12 one-way rides × $30 = $43,200.

Total: $118,200. The spoken $111,000 total does not match those inputs. Compared with the illustrative $225,000 premium scenario, the difference is $106,800, not the narrated $114,000. The original audio is preserved; the videos show the correction on screen.

Five examples under stated assumptions

These examples cover 25 years, 2031–2055, using constant 2026 dollars. They exclude financing, inflation, opportunity costs and ending resale value. Purchase amounts, annual costs and ride prices are assumptions, not verified future offers.

  • Economical hybrids: $130,000. $30,000 purchase + $25,000 replacement + 25 × $3,000 operating costs.
  • Used hands-free vehicle example: $165,000. $35,000 purchase + $30,000 replacement + 25 × $3,500 operating costs + 25 × $500 software costs.
  • Premium automation example: $225,000. $50,000 purchase + $45,000 replacement + 25 × $4,000 operating costs + 25 × $1,200 software costs.
  • Hybrid then rides: $118,200. $30,000 purchase + 15 × $3,000 operating costs + 10 × 12 × 12 × $30 in rides.
  • Rides only: $108,000. 25 × 12 × 12 × $30.

The ride count changes the result

Twelve one-way rides per month is not twelve round trips. It is about six round trips if each outing needs a separate return ride. At the assumed $30 per one-way ride, 12 monthly rides cost $4,320 a year. Thirty monthly rides cost $10,800 a year.

Those calculations do not prove rides will be available. They also do not account for a higher fare on a longer route, a cancelled pickup, or a backup trip. Replace the assumed ride count and price with your own needs before drawing a conclusion.

A comparison is not a recommendation

The lowest modeled total is not automatically the most workable plan. Test coverage, booking rules, accessibility, waiting times and return journeys. A household with frequent medical visits may have a different answer from one with occasional outings.

Likewise, software costs can change. Check the current price, trial period, supported features, transfer rules and cancellation terms for the actual vehicle. A 20-year multiplication at one monthly rate is arithmetic, not a 20-year contract.

Build your own version

  1. Count essential one-way trips.
  2. Collect real purchase, insurance, maintenance and ride estimates.
  3. Separate one-time costs from recurring costs.
  4. Try a higher-cost and lower-availability case.
  5. Keep a practical backup before giving up an existing option.

The useful outcome is a plan you can revise, not a prediction you have to defend.

Checks before acting

For vehicle capabilities and restrictions, start with the owner's manual and the manufacturer's current terms. For local service, confirm current fares, eligibility, booking requirements and operating hours directly with EATRAN at 517-543-4087. The website includes older information, so this article does not quote its fares as current.
