Our first night exploring Columbus turned into exactly the kind of evening we like: neighborhood bars, local beer, an unexpectedly good flatbread, a dangerously enthusiastic Cosmo, and a bar that changed completely once the locals started arriving.
There are nights you plan down to the last detail, and then there are nights when you simply start walking, follow the neighborhood and see where the city takes you.
Our first night in Columbus, Ohio, turned into the second kind.
We had arrived in Columbus earlier that day and were staying in the Franklinton area. Instead of heading immediately toward the city's biggest attractions, we started exploring the places that looked interesting to us.
By the time we reached The Walrus, we had already made our way through Club 185, Land-Grant and a necessary Kroger stop.
The original attraction at The Walrus was simple:
Sing-along karaoke.
But before anybody started singing, there was the equally important business of dinner and drinks.
First Impression: More Neighborhood Hangout Than Tourist Stop
Walking into The Walrus earlier in the evening, it wasn't packed.
That turned out to be a good thing.
We could grab a seat, look over the menu and settle in without fighting a crowd. The place has an industrial pub feel—exposed ductwork, brick, wood, televisions and a casual layout that doesn't demand anything from you.
Not fancy.
Not trying too hard.
Exactly the sort of place we tend to like when we're exploring a city.
What we didn't realize yet was that arriving early would give us an opportunity to watch the place transform.
The Flatbread Decision
The menu offered several flatbreads, including Buffalo Chicken, BBQ Chicken, Night Owl with pepperoni and basil, and Tomato Basil.
Then we spotted the option that immediately made more sense:
Build Your Own Flatbread.
Mozzarella and marinara plus three toppings.
We went with:
Mushroom.
Pepperoni.
Sometimes there is no reason to overcomplicate dinner.
We went with half a flatbread, which turned out to be about perfect for an evening when we weren't planning to sit in one restaurant for three hours.
And the verdict?
Yummy.
The combination worked exactly the way you'd expect. Pepperoni brought the spice and salt, bacon made absolutely no attempt to improve its nutritional reputation, and the mushrooms gave us just enough vegetable content to pretend we'd made a balanced decision.
This was bar food doing its job.
We'd order it again.
Then There Were the Drinks
Kellie ordered a Cosmo.
This drink deserves its own paragraph.
Somewhere between cranberry, citrus and vodka, the bartender apparently decided subtlety was unnecessary.
"A bit more rubbing alcohol than Cosmo."
To be fair, nobody could accuse them of watering down the drinks.
Mine was considerably more successful.
I went simple with a vodka tonic, and it was great.
No drama.
No chemistry experiment.
Vodka. Tonic. Success.
Vodka Tonic: 1
Cosmo: 0
Then 8:30 Happened
This may have been the most useful thing we learned about The Walrus.
Earlier in the evening, it was relaxed.
Then, around 8:30 PM, the locals started showing up.
You could feel the room changing.
More people came through the door. The energy picked up. What had felt like an easy early-evening restaurant and bar started becoming a nighttime neighborhood hangout.
That's exactly the kind of transition we like finding when we travel.
You can search for "best bars in Columbus" all day long. Search results can tell you ratings, menus, hours and prices.
They can't always tell you when a place becomes itself.
For us, The Walrus started revealing that around 8:30.
Why This Is Our Kind of Travel
We're increasingly interested in the version of a city that isn't necessarily packaged for visitors.
Give us the neighborhood bar.
Give us the local restaurant.
Give us live music.
Give us karaoke.
Give us the place where we can sit down early, have something to eat, and then notice that an hour later we're surrounded by people who actually live there.
That's more interesting to us than checking another famous attraction off a list.
Columbus seems particularly well suited to traveling this way.
Our first evening wasn't built around one major destination. It was a string of smaller stops:
Each one showed us a slightly different piece of Columbus.
And we were only getting started.
Would We Go Back to The Walrus?
Yes.
The build-your-own flatbread was a hit, my vodka tonic was excellent, the atmosphere was comfortable, and watching the local crowd start arriving made staying later worthwhile.
Would Kellie order another Cosmo?
That's a different question.
Perhaps the bartender was simply making sure we received full value for our alcohol dollar.
Mission accomplished.
The Bottom Line
If you're exploring Columbus and want a casual place where you can grab food and drinks without making the evening overly complicated, The Walrus worked well for us.
Our advice based on this particular Wednesday night is simple:
Stay later if you want to watch the place come alive.
Order the build-your-own flatbread.
Bacon, mushroom and pepperoni worked.
The vodka tonic gets our approval.
And if you order the Cosmo?
You have been warned.
