From Deer Damage to Rattle Canning
A deer collision turned an ordinary drive into a damaged headlight, broken mirror, bent fender, restricted driver’s door—and an unexpected lesson in backyard automotive repair.
We have now reached the point where a replacement fender is hanging from a homemade stand in the backyard, surrounded by sandpaper, color-matched automotive paint, and clear coat.
In automotive DIY language, we are “rattle canning” the fender: painting it with aerosol cans rather than sending it through a professional body shop.
It Started With a Deer
On May 29, our 2018 Ford Fiesta collided with a deer.
The impact damaged several parts along the driver’s side of the car, including the side mirror, headlight, front fender, part of the hood area, and the space around the driver’s door.
The car still ran, but the damage was more than cosmetic. The driver’s door could only open partially because the damaged fender had been pushed backward toward it.
That created the first major decision:
Do we send the entire car to a body shop, or repair the manageable parts ourselves?
Professional collision repair can become expensive quickly. Labor, paint preparation, body-panel alignment, replacement parts, paint blending, and shop supplies all add up.
On an older vehicle, it is also possible to spend a substantial percentage of the car’s value repairing damage that is partly cosmetic.
We needed the Fiesta to be functional, safe, and reasonably presentable. We did not necessarily need it restored to flawless showroom condition.
That distinction shaped everything that followed.
Breaking One Big Repair Into Smaller Jobs
Instead of treating the Fiesta as one large damaged vehicle, we started treating it as a series of smaller, separate projects.
- The mirror was one job.
- The headlight was another.
- The fender was another.
- The driver’s-door clearance would be evaluated after the damaged panel was addressed.
This made the project less intimidating.
We did not need to become professional mechanics or auto-body technicians overnight. We only needed to determine which individual tasks were realistically within reach, which ones required help, and which ones should be left to a professional.

The car remained drivable.

Why We Chose a Replacement Fender
A damaged fender can sometimes be straightened, hammered, pulled, filled, sanded, primed, and repainted.
That approach can work, but it requires metalworking and bodywork skills—especially when the panel has been pushed toward the edge of a door opening.
A replacement fender offered a more direct path.
Instead of trying to return badly distorted sheet metal to its original shape, we could begin with a straight replacement panel. The tradeoff was that the new panel still needed to be prepared, painted, cleared, and installed.

The answer was rattle canning.
What Does “Rattle Canning” Mean?
“Rattle canning” is an informal term for painting something with aerosol spray cans.
The name comes from the small mixing ball inside the can. When the can is shaken, that ball rattles as it mixes the paint.
This project does not involve ordinary household spray paint. We selected products intended for automotive surface preparation and refinishing:
- Automotive wet-and-dry sandpaper
- Color-matched automotive aerosol paint
- Automotive clear coat
- Cleaning and preparation materials
The color coat supplies the silver metallic finish. The clear coat adds gloss, depth, and protection.
It will not reproduce the controlled conditions of a professional paint booth. A body shop uses spray guns, carefully mixed coatings, filtered ventilation, controlled temperatures, specialized lighting, and experienced painters.
Our goal is different.
We want a solid, presentable repair that protects the panel and looks reasonably consistent with the rest of the car—without turning an older Fiesta into a major financial restoration project.
The Materials We Are Using
The products below are the practical core of this stage of the project.

Surface preparation determines whether the paint has a clean, stable foundation. Different grits can be used for correcting imperfections, scuffing an existing coating, smoothing repaired areas, and refining the surface before finishing.

The color coat is intended to approximate the vehicle’s original factory color. Matching the paint code matters, but even correctly matched paint can appear slightly different beside an older finish that has been exposed to years of sunlight and weather.

3. Automotive Clear Coat
The clear coat protects the color layer and provides much of the final gloss and visual depth.
It is not simply an optional shine sprayed on at the end. The clear layer is part of the finished coating system, and its application window must be coordinated with the instructions for the color coat.

Preparation Matters More Than the Spray Can
Spraying the paint is the dramatic part of the project, but most of the quality is created before the nozzle is ever pressed.
Inspecting the Panel
The replacement fender must be checked for shipping damage, dents, scratches, contamination, and defects in its existing protective coating.
A new part is not automatically a paint-ready part.
Cleaning the Surface
Oil, fingerprints, dust, wax, silicone, and other contaminants can interfere with adhesion or create visible defects in the finish.
A surface can look clean while still containing material that causes paint problems.
Sanding and Scuffing
The surface must provide the correct foundation for the coating system being used. Depending on the panel and its existing finish, preparation may involve scuffing, smoothing imperfections, cleaning again, and progressing through appropriate sandpaper grits.
The coating manufacturer’s instructions should determine the process—not a random internet rule that treats every panel the same.
Supporting the Fender
A loose body panel needs a stable support that allows access to its contours and edges.
Our homemade stand is not glamorous, but it holds the panel without requiring us to lay it flat or repeatedly touch freshly coated surfaces.
Applying Controlled Coats
The temptation with aerosol paint is to achieve full coverage immediately.
That is usually where runs, sags, uneven metallic patterns, and slow-curing heavy spots begin.
Multiple controlled coats, proper overlap, consistent movement, and attention to the manufacturer’s recoat window offer a better chance of producing an even finish.
Applying the Clear Coat
Once the color coat reaches the correct stage, clear coat is applied according to the product instructions.
Timing matters. Temperature matters. Humidity matters. Spray distance matters. Patience matters.
In other words, a rattle-can paint job is determined less by how aggressively someone presses the nozzle and more by how carefully everything is prepared.
A Backyard Is Not a Paint Booth
There is an obvious complication in the photograph:
We are outside.
A backyard contains grass, pollen, dust, insects, wind, changing sunlight, tree debris, and everything else nature is willing to contribute to a fresh paint job.
Every one of those things can become part of the finish.
The actual spraying therefore has to be timed around calm, dry conditions and suitable temperatures. The work area must also be positioned away from vehicles, structures, outdoor furniture, and anything else that could receive overspray.
The photo captures the setup stage. It is not a recommendation to begin spraying immediately beneath a tree while leaves, insects, and pollen are falling.
The backyard gives us room, but the weather still gets a vote.
Why Not Just Pay a Body Shop?
There is nothing wrong with professional body repair.
A qualified shop would almost certainly produce a cleaner color match, more consistent metallic orientation, better blending, controlled curing conditions, and a more refined final installation.
But every repair has to be evaluated in context.
This is a 2018 Ford Fiesta that needs to remain useful and dependable. We are balancing:
- The value of the vehicle
- The cost of professional labor
- The price of replacement parts
- The seriousness of the remaining damage
- Our ability to complete selected work ourselves
- The difference between a functional repair and a perfect restoration
Spending several thousand dollars chasing an invisible repair may not make financial sense for this particular car.
Doing nothing was not acceptable because the damaged mirror, headlight, fender, and restricted door affected the car’s function and usability.
The reasonable middle ground was to repair the important components, use affordable replacement parts, ask for help where needed, and accept that the completed car may not look as though it just rolled out of a factory paint booth.
DIY Does Not Mean Pretending to Be an Expert
One of the most important parts of this project is knowing what we do not know.
I am not an experienced automotive body technician.
That means the process requires more research, preparation, checking, and patience than it would for someone who performs collision repair every day.
It also means recognizing when a task should stop and be handed to someone with more experience.
Responsible DIY can mean:
- Buying the correct replacement part
- Studying the installation before disassembly
- Reading the coating instructions
- Preparing the materials and work area
- Completing the straightforward portions
- Getting help from a knowledgeable friend
- Using a professional when the risk exceeds the savings
The objective is not to prove that every automotive repair can be completed in a backyard.
The objective is to make a sensible decision about this repair.
The Fender Is More Than a Cosmetic Part
At this stage, the replacement fender represents the turning point in the project.
The first repairs restored basic function. The replacement mirror restored a proper view beside the vehicle. The new headlight restored lighting and road visibility.
The fender is the step that begins pulling the vehicle’s appearance, panel spacing, and driver’s-door clearance back together.
Once the painted fender is installed, we will be able to evaluate:
- How well the replacement panel fits
- Whether the driver’s door opens normally
- Whether the hood and headlight gaps align properly
- Whether additional adjustment is needed
- How closely the new finish matches the existing paint
- Whether any remaining damage needs professional attention
The progress is incremental, but it is real.
The Honest Goal: Not Perfect, Just Practical
This is unlikely to become a concours-quality paint job.
There may be a slight color difference because the original finish has aged in sunlight while the new paint has not. Metallic paint can also appear different depending on the spray angle, coat thickness, lighting, surface preparation, and how the metallic particles settle.
There may eventually be sanding, polishing, touch-up work, adjustment, or even a second attempt.
That is part of the experiment.
The honest goal is a fender that:
- Fits correctly
- Restores normal door clearance
- Is protected from corrosion
- Matches the car reasonably well
- Looks acceptable from a normal viewing distance
- Keeps the total repair cost under control
That would be a successful repair.
One Repair Decision at a Time
We did not wake up one morning and decide to open a backyard collision-repair shop.
We hit a deer.
Then we replaced a mirror.
Then we replaced a headlight.
Then we found a replacement fender.
Then we purchased automotive paint, clear coat, and sandpaper.
Now we are standing in the backyard preparing to rattle-can a car panel.
That is how many real projects happen. The complete path is rarely obvious at the beginning. You solve the first problem, learn something, solve the next one, and eventually discover that you are attempting something you never expected to do.
The next major step is to finish preparing the surface, create a cleaner temporary spray area, and wait for the right conditions.
Then it will be time to shake the cans, hear that familiar rattle, and find out what a careful backyard paint job can actually accomplish.
