Campfire Build Bar System: Subway® Meets LEGO® Meets Cast Iron
What if the best camping meal wasn't a recipe at all?
Every camping trip seems to begin with the same question.
"So... what's for dinner?"
That innocent question usually snowballs into six different opinions.
- "I don't like mushrooms."
- "Can mine be spicy?"
- "I don't want rice."
- "I'd rather have a sandwich."
- "Can I just have potatoes?"
- "What's for dessert?"
Before you know it, one dinner has somehow become six completely different meals.
This camping trip, we're trying something different.
Not a new recipe.
A completely different way to think about camp cooking.
Introducing the Campfire Build Bar System
Imagine combining three completely different ideas.
- Subway® because everyone builds their own meal.
- LEGO® because the same pieces create endless combinations.
- Cast Iron because everything still revolves around cooking over a real campfire.
Instead of planning six meals...
We're planning one pantry.
Instead of asking...
"What are we eating tonight?"
We'll ask...
"What can we build with what we already have?"
That tiny change completely transforms the camping experience.
The Philosophy
Most camping menus are built around recipes.
Monday is tacos.
Tuesday is spaghetti.
Wednesday is burgers.
Each meal requires its own ingredients.
The cooler fills up quickly.
Half the food comes home.
Everyone compromises.
The Build Bar System works backwards.
Instead of shopping for recipes...
We shop for possibilities.
One Pantry. Endless Combinations.
The goal isn't variety through more ingredients.
The goal is variety through smarter ingredients.
Every ingredient should perform multiple jobs.
If something only has one purpose...
It probably doesn't belong in the cooler.
Think in Building Blocks
Foundation
The vehicle.
- Rice
- Baked potatoes
- Pizza dough
- Sandwich bread
- Tortillas
The foundation changes.
The meal changes.
Heroes
The stars of the meal.
- Beef tips
- Smoked sausage
- Chicken
- Bacon
- Ham
- Pepperoni
One package of beef tips should become several meals.
Not just one.
Vegetables
Prep everything before leaving home.
- Bell peppers
- Sweet onions
- Mushrooms
- Jalapeños (optional)
- Banana peppers
The less knife work at camp...
The better.
Cheeses
- Mozzarella
- Sharp cheddar
- Pepper Jack
- Cream cheese
Flavor Station
- Pizza sauce
- BBQ sauce
- Garlic butter
- Ranch
- Salsa
- Hot sauce
- Worcestershire sauce
The Wild Card Basket
This might become the most fun part of camp.
These aren't necessities.
They're personality.
Each one can completely change the final meal.
- French fried onions
- Crushed Doritos
- BBQ potato chips
- Pickles
- Pickled onions
- Pepperoncini
- Hot honey
- Everything Bagel seasoning
- Old Bay seasoning
- Pineapple
- Jalapeños
- Crushed pretzels
- Bacon bits
- Hash browns
- Fresh herbs
One topping can completely reinvent yesterday's leftovers.
The Pie Iron Changes Everything
I've owned a pie iron for years.
Until now...
I always thought of it as a sandwich maker.
I'm beginning to think that's selling it short.
A pie iron is really a portable campfire oven.
It can make breakfast.
Lunch.
Dinner.
Dessert.
Late-night snacks.
It may become the most versatile cooking tool we own.

The Leftover Strategy
This might be the smartest part of the whole system.
Nothing is planned as leftovers.
Everything is planned as the beginning of tomorrow's meal.
Extra beef tips become:
- Breakfast hash
- Philly pockets
- Rice bowls
- Burritos
- Loaded potatoes
Extra sausage becomes:
- Breakfast sandwiches
- Pizza pockets
- Skillet hash
Leftover vegetables become almost everything.
Two Cooking Stations
Rather than one person cooking for six...
We'll probably split into two stations.
Station One
- Dutch oven
- Cast iron skillet
- Beef tips
- Rice
- Eggs
- Bacon
Station Two
- Pie iron station
- Everyone builds their own meal
- Everyone experiments
- Everyone eats what they actually wanted
Cooking becomes part of the evening's entertainment.
We're Still Planning
This isn't our final menu.
It's an idea.
A framework.
A way of thinking that hopefully makes camping more flexible, more fun, and a lot less stressful when you're feeding a group with different tastes.
If it works, I have a feeling this won't just be how we cook on this camping trip.
It might become how we cook on every camping trip.
Sometimes the best ideas don't come from a cookbook.
Sometimes they start around a campfire with a pie iron, a Dutch oven, a handful of ingredients... and the willingness to build something a little different.
Question of the Day:
If you were standing in front of the Campfire Build Bar, what would you build first? A Philly beef pocket? A BBQ chicken melt? A breakfast pie iron? Or something completely original? Share your best combination—I have a feeling this system is only getting started.
