Chicago by E-Bike: Amtrak, Asphalt, and Unexpected Adventures

Have you ever dreamed of rolling into a big city by train, hopping off with your e-bike, and letting curiosity guide the rest? This isn’t just another urban travel story — it’s a fusion of slow exploration, sustainable travel, and gear-tested adventure.

Welcome to our latest Deep Dive AI Travel Log, where we take you behind the handlebars of a real journey: from Battle Creek, Michigan to the heart of Chicago, all by Amtrak and e-bike.

🚉 Riding the Rails: From Michigan to Chicago

The trip began in Battle Creek, MI, where Amtrak still holds its nostalgic charm. Bikes — especially e-bikes — are welcome aboard, but here’s the catch: not all routes are equal. You'll need to make sure you're on a train that accommodates bicycles and to reserve a bike slot ahead of time. (Check Amtrak’s policies for e-bikes — 50 lbs is often the limit.)

Once onboard, the excitement builds. This isn’t flying. No TSA pat-downs. No overhead bins. Just you, your bike, and a train slicing across the Midwest. Watching the skyline of Chicago rise from your seat is a powerful moment — the kind that makes you glad you didn’t drive.

🚲 First Pedal Strokes: Welcome to the Windy City

Arriving at Chicago’s Union Station is both thrilling and a bit chaotic. The historic grandeur of the building meets the modern hustle of a major city — but with a bike, you can bypass the cab lines, glide past honking horns, and be on your way your way.

Your first ride in Chicago might feel like a comic book panel: skyscrapers towering above, murals flying by, pedestrians dodging like characters in motion. It’s real, it’s raw, and it’s oddly freeing.

⚡ The Ride: Meet the Ride1Up Portola

Our wheels for this trip? The Ride1Up Portola — a compact yet powerful folding e-bike that handled Chicago’s bike lanes and potholes with ease. With its fat tires, comfortable upright geometry, and surprisingly strong acceleration, it was the perfect choice for train-friendly travel and city cruising. Fold it. Roll it. Ride it hard. This bike delivered.

🛠️ Gear Check: What Worked, What Didn't

We field-tested a full setup designed for urban riding and day-trip flexibility. Here's what we brought — and how it performed:

  • Ortlieb Back-Roller City Rear Pannier: Bulletproof waterproofing, rock-solid attachment, and the clean Euro design that makes you look like you know what you’re doing even when you’re lost. A+ for daily riding and light gear.
  • DJI Osmo Pocket 3: This stabilized camera captured incredible low-profile footage of bike lanes, street musicians, and alley murals — no bulky rig needed. Our go-to tool for content-on-the-go.
  • Giro Register MIPS II Bike Helmet: Stylish, lightweight, and safety-first. Chicago traffic isn’t gentle — this gave peace of mind and didn’t overheat during long rides.
  • Anker Power Bank (PowerCore 10K): With all the GPS use and filming, phones die fast. This brick saved us more than once and was slim enough to stash in a jacket or pannier pocket.
  • ROCK BROS Bike Rack Bag: A handy trunk bag that doubled as a camera pouch, snack caddy, and emergency layer stash. Zippers and side pockets held up perfectly over 50+ city miles.

🗺️ Neighborhood Highlights & Hidden Gems

Riding north along the lakeshore path, you see the city melt into parks, beaches, and bold public art. We detoured through Wicker Park, Logan Square, and Pilsen — each neighborhood revealing a different side of Chicago:

  • Pilsen: Stunning murals and authentic tacos. The cultural vibrancy is felt block by block.
  • Wicker Park: Indie shops, bike-friendly cafes, and a cool, artsy energy. Perfect place to stop for coffee and people-watch.
  • Logan Square: Great food, tree-lined streets, and a community vibe that invites you to linger.

Each of these areas was explored on two wheels — no parking meters, no rideshares, just slow travel at its finest.

📚 Lessons from the Saddle

  • Chicago’s bike infrastructure is decent, but knowing your routes in advance helps. The Lakefront Trail is a dream, but city streets can surprise you.
  • Always carry a phone mount. Constantly pulling your phone out isn’t just annoying — it’s unsafe.
  • Use panniers or trunk bags to avoid a sweaty backpack. Your shoulders will thank you after 10 miles of stop-and-go traffic.
  • Plan hydration and bathrooms. Don’t assume you can just “pull over” like on a trail.

Most importantly, stay curious. That little alley might lead to the best mural or street band of your day.

🎥 Behind the Scenes: Our E-Bike Film Setup

Filming on the go took strategy. We mounted the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 on the handlebars for POV shots and stashed it in the ROCK BROS trunk bag when not in use. The power bank kept everything running. If you’re planning to document your ride, this setup strikes the perfect balance between quality and portability.
