Smash Burgers & Statues – A Maple Leaf Inn Review

Sometimes the best meals come with a bit of character — and not just on the plate. Our visit to the Maple Leaf Inn in Vermontville, Michigan, turned into an experience far beyond just food. It was a snapshot of small-town hospitality, a touch of biker bar culture, and a burger worth writing about.

Welcome to Vermontville

The Maple Leaf Inn greets visitors with wood siding, a hand-carved statue, neon glow, and a “Welcome Bikers” banner. Classic small-town energy.

From the moment we arrived, it was clear this wasn’t a chain or a curated tourist trap — it was the real deal. A wood-paneled facade, biker signs, and a towering statue carved from wood set the tone: casual, local, and proud of it.

Grab a Seat and a Menu

Cold beer, warm food, no nonsense. Maple Leaf Inn’s bar setup is as classic as it gets.

From crispy chicken to mini tacos and burger baskets — the menu keeps it real and reasonable.

We found a spot at the bar, ordered a couple drinks — a Michelob Ultra for me, and a draft for Kellie — and got to browsing the menu. It was the kind of lineup that speaks to comfort: hot pepper cheese balls, quesadillas, onion rings, and everything fried that should be. But what caught my eye wasn’t on the regular list — it was the specials board.

The Board That Spoke to Me

“¼ Pound Jalapeño Onion Double Smash Burger w/ FF” — sold. And yes, I asked for onion rings instead.

I went for the ¼ Pound Jalapeño Onion Double Smash Burger Deluxe — and swapped the fries for onion rings, because you can’t miss when you double down on onions. Kellie went with the taco salad, aiming for something crisp but filling. We weren’t disappointed.

The Food

Kellie’s taco salad came in a crispy tortilla bowl, the shell perfectly fried and shaped like it was meant to cradle something good. The beef was seasoned just right — not too salty, not bland. Layers of lettuce, tomato, cheese, and a drizzle of sour cream made it hearty without being heavy.

But my burger? A revelation.

The patties were seared just right — crisp edges, juicy center. Jalapeños brought heat, grilled onions added depth, and melty cheese tied it all together. The bun held firm, and the onion rings were thick, golden, and satisfying. Every bite hit the right note: greasy in the good way, crunchy, cheesy, and bold.

Out Back: Local Art Meets Local Hangout

Out back you’ll find mural art, picnic tables, and the towering figure of a wood-carved warrior with his howling wolf.

We wandered out back after the meal to take in the scenery. There was a second wooden statue, this one even more detailed than the first. The vibe was quiet, friendly, and local — a place where you could imagine watching the sun set with another round.

Final Thoughts

The Maple Leaf Inn is the kind of place you remember not just for the food, but for the moment. The textures of the building, the casual flow of conversation inside, the details like the specials board and local carvings — it’s all part of the flavor.

It’s a burger joint, a bar, a biker hangout, and a local fixture rolled into one. And whether you’re coming for the onion rings or the wood statues, you’ll leave with something to talk about.
